Local Nonprofit Profile: The Ability Center

The Ability Center

Since 2008, The Ability Center’s mission has been to provide people impacted by disabilities with opportunities to be fit, active, and to play together, side by side, with their able-bodies loved ones. We build communities where people of all ages and abilities are provided a universal opportunity for health, wellness, and recreation.

Open Gym and RampUp Programs: serving over 1,000 disabled individuals of all ages annually.

This free program offers community members an opportunity to play TOGETHER in a “Different Pair of Shoes.”  Activities include wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports and play. Programming is free and open to the public at multiple locations around Milwaukee County. All equipment is provided. Disability not required!

And don’t think that just because you can’t pedal a bike with your feet you can’t take a ride! Biking is now open for ALL abilities. Enjoy hand cycles, for free, on Milwaukee’s Lakefront. And then head to Bradford Beach, grab a beach wheelchair, and head to the water!

And for cold weather enthusiasts, ice skating in Milwaukee is now more inclusive than ever before! Ice sleds are available seasonally outdoors at Red Arrow Park and all year long indoors at Wilson Ice Arena.

ASAP: Inclusive Education, serving up to 10,000 students annually across Wisconsin.

Our ASAP assemblies include a presentation from a wheelchair athlete, providing students and staff an opportunity to play wheelchair basketball in this interactive experience. Our team will lead PE classes for the day, teaching about various adapted sports, play games, and provide disability awareness training.

George Moss Universal Park

From ballfields to forest, bathrooms to playgrounds, fitness to picnics, Moss Universal Park is designed for ALL abilities, ALL ages, ALL the time! Transitioning beyond just an inclusive playground, we are transforming all 18 acres of Milwaukee County’s Wisconsin Avenue Park into a universally inclusive mecca of sport, play, and recreation.

With amazing community support, we have raised over $8MM to date, the George F. Moss Universal Park intends to break ground on Phase 1 during the Fall of 2026, with a target completion by the summer of 2028.
